Today, I intentionally stock my vacation rental with an abundance mindset—more towels than guests will need, extra blankets, plenty of everyday essentials, thoughtful welcome gifts, and all the little comforts that allow people to settle in and relax almost immediately.

What many hosts don’t realize is that from the moment guests walk through the front door, they’re making dozens of tiny, often subconscious judgments about their stay.

Over the years, I’ve tested a lot of products while hosting my own vacation rental.
Some have been worth every penny.
Others definitely haven’t lived up to the hype.
But what I’ve learned is that you don’t necessarily need more things. You need the right things in generous enough quantities that your guests never have to worry about them.

1. Create a Welcome Basket Guests Will Actually Enjoy
This was one of the areas that took the most trial and error to perfect.
When we first started hosting, we’d stop by Trader Joe’s before every guest arrival to pick up a bottle of sparkling wine along with a few snacks. It felt like a thoughtful way to welcome people into our home.
But after hosting hundreds of guests, I noticed something surprising.
The wine was rarely touched.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that while some guests would appreciate it, others might not drink alcohol for personal, religious, or health reasons. I also wanted to be mindful of guests in recovery.
Hospitality should make every guest feel comfortable, and I never wanted a welcome gift to unintentionally make someone feel excluded.
My husband and I also included packets of authentic Italian instant espresso—one of my personal favorites—but much like the wine, it often went untouched.
That experience taught me an important lesson:
The best vacation rental welcome gifts aren’t necessarily the most elaborate. They’re the most universally appreciated.
Today, we keep our welcome basket simple, practical, and enjoyable for almost everyone.
We include microwave popcorn for movie night, granola bars for busy mornings, hot cocoa, apple cider packets, and a selection of teas.
These aren’t extravagant gifts. They’re simply little treats waiting for guests when they arrive—and those small gestures help set the tone for their stay.

What About Coffee?
Coffee is one area where we’ve learned that guests often have very specific preferences.

2. Create a Well-Stocked Vacation Rental Bathroom
Let’s be honest—there’s nothing particularly glamorous about stocking a bathroom.
But there’s also nothing worse than arriving at your vacation rental after a long day of travel only to discover you’re down to the last roll of toilet paper, you forgot your shampoo, or there isn’t a hair dryer anywhere in the house.
These aren’t luxury items.
They’re the little details that quietly shape a guest’s experience.
When we first started our vacation rental, we relied on our cleaning company to stock the bathrooms. They left a few rolls of toilet paper, a small hotel-style bar of soap, and we refilled the shampoo and conditioner as needed.
Over time, however, we noticed those little touches slowly disappearing.
The generous supply of toilet paper became just one or two rolls, and that tiny bar of soap wasn’t particularly useful for guests staying several nights.
That’s when we realized something important:
Abundance isn’t something you can assume. It has to be intentional.
As we gained more hosting experience and eventually hired a new housekeeping team, we made a commitment to creating bathrooms that felt more like a boutique hotel than a basic rental.
Today, every bathroom includes luxury wall-mounted dispensers filled with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. We leave at least five rolls of toilet paper in each bathroom, keep the hand soap filled to the brim, provide black makeup towels to help protect our other linens, and have a hair dryer with styling attachments available in every bathroom.
None of these additions are particularly extravagant.
But together, they communicate something important to your guests:
We’ve thought of you.
The goal is for guests to never wonder if they’ll have enough.
They shouldn’t have to send you a message asking for another roll of toilet paper or search every cabinet looking for a hair dryer.
They should simply enjoy their stay.

Last, but certainly not least, is the laundry room.
It may not be the most exciting space in your vacation rental, but it’s one of the easiest places to exceed your guests’ expectations.
I’ve stayed in vacation rentals that provided only one or two laundry pods for an entire week. While that may technically be enough to say laundry detergent is “provided,” it can leave guests wondering if they should save those pods for an emergency or avoid doing laundry altogether.
That’s exactly the feeling we’re trying to eliminate.
A well-stocked laundry room gives your guests options.
Maybe they spilled coffee on a favorite shirt. Maybe the kids came back from the beach covered in sand. Or maybe they’d simply like to head home with a suitcase full of clean clothes instead of a week’s worth of dirty laundry.
Having plenty of detergent allows them to take care of those little inconveniences without making an unexpected trip to the store.
There’s another benefit for hosts, too.
I’ve found that when guests have easy access to laundry supplies, they’re much more likely to pre-treat an accidental stain on a towel or piece of bedding. Occasionally, guests will even start a load of laundry before checking out.
I never expect my guests to do laundry—they’re on vacation, after all—but I certainly appreciate it when they choose to.
Like every other area of your home, the laundry room should reflect an abundance mindset.
A generous supply of laundry detergent, stain remover, dryer sheets, and a few thoughtful extras tells your guests that you’ve anticipated their needs before they even arise.

When we think about creating a five-star vacation rental, it’s easy to focus on the big things.
Beautiful furniture. Stylish décor. Comfortable beds. Great views.
And yes, those things absolutely matter.
But after years of hosting, I’ve learned that some of the most memorable parts of a stay are surprisingly ordinary.
It’s finding another stack of towels when you need one.
It’s discovering plenty of toilet paper under the sink.
It’s grabbing popcorn from the welcome basket for an impromptu movie night.
It’s being able to wash the kids’ sandy clothes without wondering whether you’re using the host’s last laundry pod.
These moments aren’t glamorous enough to make the listing photos.
But they’re hospitality.
